From the north (Cancun) it's about a 45-minute drive down 307. You can enter Playa on the northern end via Avenida Constituyentes, or through the center of town using Avenida Juarez.

Both of these main thoroughfares lead to the popular shopping district known as 5th Avenue (locals call it Avenida Quinta or La Quinta). 5th Avenue is a mile-long pedestrian-friendly street that's packed with shops, stores, restaurants, cantinas and boutique hotels. There are several modestly-priced public parking lots conveniently located near Avenida Constituyentes and Juarez, and street parking is often available along 4th and 6th Avenues. If you're traveling by cab, just have the driver drop you at one end or the other and start walking.

Overwhelming as 5th Avenue can be at first, it's virtually impossible to get lost in here. An excursion to 5th Avenue is most fun starting in the early evening. After 6:00 p.m. the sun starts setting and the temperature drops accordingly. Restaurant owners entice you into their establishments, strolling mariachi musicians entertain at a moment's notice, and the neon signs cast their their colorful glow over the street.

You'll pay a little bit more for all the ambience here, but not that much. Food and souvenirs may run 10-15% higher, but it's worth it. 5th Avenue offers a family-friendly environment and is an extremely clean and safe place to spend an afternoon or evening.
-Larry Widen
larry@funjet.com

Riviera Maya Journal 2 #6 - Exploring Pueblo Tulum

At the end of the Riviera Maya, about 80 south of Cancún, ancient ruins, boutique hotels and an art colony comprise the eclectic pueblo of Tulum.

In the city's archeological zone, Mayan palaces, temples and other civic buildings from 1300 A.D. overlook the sea from a breathtaking cliffside location. In half an hour we were among the ruins of this ancient city, with all the great buildings in full view, casting prodigious shadows over the plain and presenting a spectacle which, even after all that we had seen, once more excited in us emotions of wonder."
The above description appears in the diaries of John L. Stephens, a writer who visited Chichen Itza in 1841. Stephens and his companions must have been intrepid explorers, for to reach Chichen in those days was difficult indeed. The heat, insects, jungle and scarcity of fresh water are just a few factors that modern-day visitors don't often consider.

Various other expeditions traveled to the ruins after Stephens' diaries were published, and in 1895 the amateur achaeologist Edward H. Thompson began what would become a 30-year examination of the site. As part of his explorations, Thompson dredged the first artifacts out of the Sacred Cenote. From 1924 to 1944, the Mexico government excavated and restored the Temple of Warriors and a number of other buildings at Chichen. In the 1960's the Sacred Cenote was dredged again, this time under the supervision of Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

Today, Chichen Itza is the most visited of the major Maya archaelogical sites. Unfortunately, deterioration has led to the famous pyramid, El Castillo, becoming unsafe for climbing. Still, a few hours on the grounds are well worth the trip. Chichen's excavated ruins include temples, palaces, markets, baths, and ballcourts. And the Sacred Cenote is easily accessible for viewing.
-Larry Widen
larry@funjet.com

Riviera Maya Journal 2 #4 - A Visit to Valladolid

Just 40 miles west of Cobá is Valladolid, a charming city with architecture and customs that recall Colonial Spain. Instead of the traditional open-air Mexican plaza, downtown Valladolid is clustered around a park with filled with majestic banyan and ceiba trees. This lovely public square is enclosed by elegant wrought iron railings. Across the street, the Hotel Maria de la Luz serves the local lunch favorite, a tender, flavorful pork dish called cochinita pibil. Marinated in in habanero peppers, cumin, paprika, chili powder, coriander, salt and pepper, the pork loin simmers for hours before making its way to the table. A few forkfuls of cochinita are placed inside homemade Merida bread and dipped in the spicy achiote broth before eating. If you’re waiting for the bill, know that Mexican waiters are far too polite to bring it until you actually ask them to do so. A simple ‘la cuenta, por favor’ whenever you’re ready will do the trick.

The hotel rests in the shadow of San Gervasio, a 600-year-old cathedral that was around when the Mayans were holding off the Spanish soldiers who wanted control of the region. Three blocks away is the historic Cenote Zací, a huge freshwater spring in which Mayan insurgents hid before ambushing the Spaniards in Valladolid’s bloodiest battle. On a happier note, there are several fine arts and crafts stores along Calle 42 with unbelievably low prices. Plates, cups, wall art and many other ceramic items are a real bargain here.

Valladolid is a wonderful place to experience Old World Spanish art and culture at your own pace. Spend a whole day or just a few hours. Daytrippers who venture off the public square will find open-air mercados that sell fresh fruits and meats. Very few people in Valladolid speak English, but they’re extremely gracious to visitors who dredge up some long-forgotten high school Spanish.
-Larry Widen
mailto:Larry@funjet.com

Riviera Maya Journal 2 #3 - The ruins of Cobá

Visitors to the Cancún area will enjoy exploring the spectacular ruins of Cobá, an ancient jungle city that archaeologists think was built in 600 A.D. Because the local advertising materials often concentrate on nearby Chichén Itzá, many tourists don’t find their way over here. As a result, those who arrive early in the day may just find they’ve got Cobá all to themselves. The city is huge and spreads out over 50 square miles so be sure to bring a bottle of water and a comfortable pair of shoes. Not all of Cobá’s buildings are on display, but a series of well-maintained gravel paths lead to the ones that are. The bicycles, which can be rented at the entrance, are a great way to cover a lot of ground in a little time. There are virtually no hills in the city, and pedaling is effortless. A can of insect repellent makes time spent at Cobá more enjoyable. Without it, the tiny jungle mosquitos will raise a few harmless but annoying bites that turn itchy after a day or two.

Cobá’s astronomical observatory, the royal palace, a military watchtower and two pelota arenas are among the silent sentinels that line the sacbé, mathematically precise Mayan roads that radiate in five directions like spokes on a wheel. One particular sacbé is exactly 100 kilometers long and leads to Chichén Itzá, while another goes to the site of Yaxuna. To date, 16 of these roads have been uncovered in Cobá. Experts estimate that more than 50,000 people once lived in the city and there are about 6,000 structures still hidden within the jungle awaiting excavation. Cobá has been identified as a major economic center that supplied goods to the neighboring Mayan communities. The port cities of Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Tulum were important trade hubs that were used for bringing merchandise into Cobá.

Deep inside the complex is Nohoch-Mul, a massive limestone pyramid that has the distinction of being the tallest structure in the Yucatan. Climbing the steep 120-foot facade is a bit of a challenge, but most definitely worthwhile. The rope bolted to the stairs comes in handy, especially towards the top. There’s a place to sit and rest near the bas-relief stone carvings at the summit while admiring the stunning views of the surrounding jungle. Several structures are partially visible through the foliage. Cobá is operated by the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology & History. Admission is 45 pesos (about $4.50) Monday through Saturday. There is no charge to visit on Sundays and national holidays.
-Larry Widen
larry@funjet.com

Riviera Maya Journal 2 #2 - Casa Sombra

The beach house we stayed at is called Casa Sombra (Shade House). The water park of Xel-Ha is about 5 minutes drive from here.

Casa Sombra comes with a Mayan couple, Dino and Artemia, who are the live-in caretakers. They actually stay in a separate cottage at the rear of the property, and they are as visible (or invisible) as you like.

The guest house is 50 feet from the ocean and has huge windows in the living room that look out on it. At midnight there were almost 100 baby turtles scrambling around looking for the ocean. We gathered a bunch of them in a bucket so they'd be safe until they could be taken and released into the surf. They'd never been there, so everything was brand new for them. We decided to rent a beach house rather than stay at one of the large all-inclusive resorts, just to try something different.

The beach house, called Casa Sombra, was located in the town of Akumal, which is about 60 miles south of Cancun. We also rented a car, figuring that having our own transportation would give us more freedom and allow us to see more of the area. I'll put some stories about driving and the beach house in subsequent posts.

The Cancun airport is pretty small, and the rental car agencies are located less than a block from the terminal. It's very easy to exit the airport and get onto Highway 307, which is the main north-south road that serves all 80 miles of the Riviera Maya. About 15 miles south of Cancun is a tiny beach town called Puerto Morelos. If you blink, you'll miss it. But if you're in the area, it's a great place to visit for lunch or a cocktail.

The town is only a few blocks long, and like most other Mexican villages, everything is centered around the plaza. The Blue Marlin, a little grill on Tulum Street, has great food for 55 pesos (about $5) per plate. The waitress's name is Reina. She dosen't speak English, but a little high school Spanish goes a long way down here.

Across the plaza on Avenida Roja Gomez is Iglesias de San Jose, a beautiful Catholic church that's worth a quick visit. There's a stained glass window and some religious statuary inside. Puerto Morelos is pretty laid-back, what would have been called a "hippie" town 30 years ago. Residents include businessmen, painters, artisans, marine biologists, dive masters, doctors, and local fishermen. There are also three or four gift shops that sell souvenirs at better prices than you'll find in Cancun, and book lovers will want to stop in at Alme Libre, the Riviera Maya's largest used bookstore.
-Larry Widen
larry@funjet.com

Riviera Maya Journal #14 - Getting Ready - Larry Widen

I'm in the end stages of making plans for an August 12 return visit to Cancun and the Riviera Maya region. My daughter's heading off to college in a few weeks, and we thought this would be a great place for what might be our last big vacation as a family. The kids have been wanting to see Mexico for a while now, and the timing is right. Even though we're staying in a remote area north of Playa del Carmen, we're renting a car for the week so we can visit Cancun, Chichen Itza, Cozumel and a number of attractions in the region. There's a Mayan village near where we're staying, and I plan to see that as well. It's a 45-minute drive straight into the jungle and quite removed from the modern world. I'm told the elders speak only Mayan, but the younger people speak Spanish. Should be interesting. Watch for some new posts toward the end of August. I'll include stories and photos!

Barcelo Maya resort vacation

In June my sister and I went to Riviera Maya for a 5-night vacation, and it was great. There’s some additional information about this on Funjet’s website. Check it out.

Riviera Maya Journal #12 - Shopping - Larry Widen

Although there are many areas in Riviera Maya to shop, the beach community of Playa del Carmen is probably the largest single concentration of boutiques, shops, stores, restaurants, nightclubs and other vendors. Homesick visitors will take comfort in knowing there's a McDonald's and a Johnny Rockets in Playa, but to tell the truth, I didn't see many Americans in either place. The majority of diners at both restaurants sounded European.

Playa's main drag is called 5th Avenue, and unless you're a marathon shopper, you won't be able to see it all in one visit. It seemed to me that many people came for an early supper and then spent the rest of the evening strolling up and down the streets. After a while, I started to recognize some of them, and each time they were carrying another bag! Surprisingly, many merchants along 5th Avenue maintained fixed prices in their stores. The time-honored Mexican tradition of haggling over the price of an item is less apparent in Playa, so unless you've got unlimited funds, you may want to visit the marketplaces in Cancun or Cozumel where bargaining is alive and well.

Riviera Maya Journal #11 - Shopping - Larry Widen

For people who love to browse in markets and boutiques, Riviera Maya offers an endless array of places to do just that. In a recent survey, 57,000 travel agents nationwide were asked to rank the other most popular destinations for weddings and romantic getaways. Not surprisingly, Cancun topped the responses, along with Las Vegas, the Caribbean and Hawaii.

Although just a short distance from the nightclubs and nonstop fun of Cancun and Cozumel, brides-to-be are attracted to Riviera Maya because of the solitude and tranquility. “There are 80 miles of unspoiled white sand beaches,” says Tammy Lee, Vice President of Marketing for the Mark Travel Group, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based firm that books destination wedding packages for thousands of brides and grooms each year. “After you’re done partying in Cancun, Riviera Maya offers peace and quiet.”

Many Mexico resorts have full-time wedding planners on staff to handle all the details. The seemingly endless list of tasks associated with planning a wedding are enough to push anyone to the edge of insanity. Multiple phone calls and in-person appointments with caterers, musicians, photographers, florists and the bridal shop are just the beginning. Guest lists swell to epic proportions and family members suddenly have opinions on every aspect of the event. Wedding packages in Riviera Maya usually include the minister (or other non-denominational official), license, flowers, cake, champagne, photography and choice of location for the ceremony.

Small wonder then, that a growing number of couples are choosing to be married in an exciting vacation destination surrounded by a select group of family and friends. In the United States we're always on the go, always multi-tasking, because, hell, time is money. We make appointments to meet people at an exact time, in a certain place and always with some kind of expectation of achieving a goal or outcome. In the vacation destinations of Mexico, that kind of pressure just doesn't exist.

Here's an example: The hotel concierge has you set up to be on the 9:00 a.m. ferry to Cozumel in the morning. She's told you to be in the lobby at 8:00 to meet your taxi or bus driver for the ride to the docks at Playa del Carmen. Like any good American, you show up 10 or 15 minutes early, because that's what we do. So where's the driver? Shouldn't he be here a few minutes early as well? Actually, no. Turns out he's downstairs having a complimentary breakfast at the hotel buffet.

Now you're starting to get a little nervous, because you'd planned to get to the ferry dock a little early as well, just to make sure you get a seat and all that. Why is the driver meandering down the road, then? Shouldn't we be making better time? (Oh, the mindset we've got!) In the end, the whole thing works out. The 9:00 a.m. ferry doesn't actually leave until 9:10 or so, and everybody who's in line makes it on and everybody gets a seat. No sweat. Except yours.

So what was all the anxiety about? Nothing, really. Remember, this is Mexico. Once you let yourself move in time to the rhythm of the country, you'll have a much more relaxing vacation.

Riviera Maya Journal #8 - Maroma - Larry Widen

The private beach complex at Maroma provides visitors with a morning or afternoon of fun and relaxation. But some travel agents who hadn't been there lately were hesitant about sending their clients to Riviera Maya.

In an effort to better educate the agents and other travel professionals, Funjet spent a week on the island of Cozumel doing daily Internet broadcasts. Most passengers seemed to gravitate indoors to an air-conditioned seat with TV monitors playing Spanish-language music videos. I opted to ride on the upper deck with the folks who enjoy salt breezes and the open sun. It’s a fabulous trip all by itself.

The ferry docks at the main pier leading into downtown Cozumel. Cozumel is a duty-free port, and as such, is an international shopper’s haven. It’s not unusual to see at least one Carnival, Disney or Norwegian Line cruise ship anchored in the bay.

Directly off the Malecón is Plaza San Miguel, the center of Cozumel’s tourist zone. Strolling mariachis and costumed dancers frequently perform traditional Mayan songs and dances in the plaza, and a number of sidewalk cafés and restaurants do business around it. Popular nightspots such as the Hard Rock Café, Fat Tuesdays and Seňor Frog’s are just steps away. Plaza San Miguel is a great place to people-watch, simply because every visitor to the island invariable passes through it. The Plaza is also home to countless shops and boutiques, many of which are located on Avenida 5, the main shopping street. As a rule, the majority of tourists don’t stray too far from this area.

But I'm a writer and photographer, and I’m always curious to find out what’s on the next street, and the next street, and the street after that. And the reality I encountered on the back streets of Cozumel was more beautiful than I’d anticipated. What’s more, the people were genuinely warm and friendly, even to a stranger who spoke little better than elementary school Spanish. I walked the streets early in the morning and late into the night. Unlike other Mexican cities I’ve been to, Cozumel exuded a sense of safety and security, even on darkened streets well after midnight.

Riviera Maya Journal #5 - Playa Del Carmen - Larry Widen

At the center of the Riviera Maya is the port town of Playa del Carmen and the neighboring beach resort community of Playacar. Be sure and visit this natural amusement park during your vacation.

Riviera Maya Journal #2 - Tulum - Larry Widen

Just a few miles down the road from the hotel properties are some of the Yucatan’s most incredible attractions. Vacationers who want to get off the hotel grounds and see some of the real Mexico are in for a treat. Tulum, an ancient Mayan city, has been deserted since 1300 A.D. The temples, government buildings and other ruins of the city have been preserved as an archaeological park. Visitors are free to stroll the ground at their leisure, or, for a small fee, a knowledgeable guide can be engaged to tell the story of this magnificent Mayan seaside port. Don't be surprised to see 4-foot iguanas sunning themselves on the rocks. They've had the run of the place for the last 800 years!

And Tulum’s not just about history. Bring your bathing suit and towel and head down the slide of the cliff to the incredible private beach. Swim, loll in the gentle surf, or explore the rock formations that support the ancient city above. There are no concessions inside the park or on the beach, and that's part of the beauty. However, it can get pretty hot here, so be sure and stay hydrated. A vendor sells chilled bottled water outside the entrance to the park.

Riviera Maya Journal #1 - Cancun - Larry Widen

As soon as the plane lands at Cancun International Airport, it’s obvious this place is special. Friendly men, smartly-dressed in turquoise shirts and white slacks greet you in that uniquely Mexican patois comprised of some English, some Spanish and something in between. Part of the fun of traveling in Mexico is the utter lack of pretensions on the part of the residents. They know their English is as bad as your Spanish, but everybody smiles and has a good time making themselves understood. “Welcome to Mexico,” says Ricardo, an employee with Lomas Travel. It’s Ricardo’s job, along with several dozen of his co-workers, to make your stay in Riviera Maya as comfortable and hassle-free as possible. Within minutes this professional corps of guides has you in a car or on a coach bus and headed down the 307 freeway to your hotel.

There are a number of outstanding resort complexes that offer beachfront access to Riviera Maya’s beautiful white sand shores. I was shown the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort, a lovely all-inclusive property with a number of world-class dining facilities right on site. I also looked at the Iberostar Paraiso Beach Hotel with its amazing interconnected swimming pool that everyone in the family will love. Ultimately, I stayed at El Dorado Royale, one of Riviera Maya’s many outstanding hotels. The choice of food was incredible. I had lunch at JoJo’s, the Caribbean grille at poolside. Later I had a dinner of Lobster Carpaccio with grilled bell peppers and all the trimmings.

Since El Dorado hosts an average of 250 weddings each year, it's not unusual to see a bridal party in full dress strolling one of the many beachfront trails. While I was there, a seaside wedding took place at La Pax chapel and the adjoining La Isla restaurant. The onsite wedding planner, Pearl, told me El Dorado is consistently voted one of the world’s top romantic hotels. “Many brides are choosing the Riviera Maya as a wedding destination,” she said. “Most of the larger resorts have fulltime wedding experts to help the guests with all the details.”

Although I'd only been there for a half a day, my initial reaction was, "What hurricane?" The tourist areas and hotels were running at 100% efficiency and the beaches were beautiful.

Riviera Maya journal from Funjet employee Larry Widen

My name is Larry Widen, and I work for Funjet. I visited extensively in the area and took several hundred photographs. I also talked with shopkeepers, restaurant owners, taxi drivers, hotel employees, tour guides, and even travelers like myself, just to get a good idea of what the Riviera Maya is really like these days.

I've been a writer and photographer for 30 years and have traveled extensively in Mexico. This was my first trip to the Yucatan area, however, and was able to experience everything in the region with no preconceived notions. I visited the ruins of the Tulum, the island of Cozumel, the eco parks of Xel-Ha and Xcaret and a number of other fun places. I'll try to post some pictures and a journal installment every few days, so check back often. Please feel free to write back if you enjoy the stories.

Update of El Cozumeleno from Funjet Traveler, Tom: Part 2

Last week we shared some of the pictures and feedback that we received from from Funjet traveler Tom (Kiel, Wisconsin). Here is the second half of his pictures and comments regarding his stay at the El Cozumeleno, Cozumel.

"Even though Cozumel was hit by hurricanes, the island is B-E-A-Utiful! We saw only saw damage to the trees in the rural areas. We couldn’t have asked for a better hotel or been treated any better by the locals. The trip was amazing. I’d go back in a heartbeat!"

"Here is one of the views from our room. If you look closely, you can see my bar stools at the pool’s swim up bar! My personal favorite was the one on the far left...don't ask me why.

The hotel had 2 whirlpools, a game room, an enlarged chess set (try moving those chess pieces around after a couple Strawberry Daiquiris) and a mini golf course. We were honestly never bored."

"The restaurants at the hotel were great! This is a picture of El Cocal restaurant which had a great buffet and an beautiful oceanview! They always had so much food to choose from, it was hard to decide. I was a big fan of their bacon at breakfast, I would put as much on my plate as I could and no one ever batted an eye. Oh sweet bacon, I will remember you always."

"We really enjoyed Cozumel. One day, we rented bicycles from the hotel (for free) and biked to the marina. On another day, we went on a snorkeling tour and saw a World War II battleship in the ocean that is helping to create a new reef. Then, I went parasailing! The view of the island was unbelievable up there and I would recommend that activity to anyone.

The snorkeling & the parasailing excursions both left from the hotel’s pier. It was so convenient that there was no excuse for us not to take advantage of all the fun activities.

We went to the town of San Miguel 3 times during our vacation because a cab ride from El Cozumeleno was only $5 each way. There were some really cool shops & bars to go into and the night we went into Carlos & Charlies we happened to see the making of a “Girls gone Wild” video! (We were spectators not participants...thanks to an enthusiastic veto from my female friends.)

I stayed in close contact with my family by going to an internet café in San Miguel and writing them emails – the internet cafes are everywhere! Plus, an hour of internet time is only $1.00. Not too shabby."

"Every Friday, Monday & Wednesday nights the hotel had a themed party where they put on a show and had a huge (and I mean huge) buffet dinner. On the Mexican themed night, they got me to up on stage and had me spin around in a circle wearing a sombrero, passing it from person to person until the music stopped. I came in 2nd place and won a snorkeling tour.

Overall I couldn't have hoped for a better trip. My friends and I had just come off of a long stretch of putting in some really long hours at work and were in desperate need of a relaxing vacation. I can't say enough good things about our trip and hope this information will help other travlers plan their perfect Mexican vacation as well.

Warm Regards,

Tom (Kiel, Wisconsin)

Great news about Cancun's beach restoration project

The following article was originally printed by the Seattle Post Intelligencer on Tuesday, April 18th, 2006.

Cancun beaches fully restored after storms
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CANCUN, Mexico -- The government declared this resort city's famous beaches officially restored Tuesday, almost exactly six months after Hurricane Wilma tore through the area and swept away long swaths of sand.

Click here to read the entire article...

"Cancun is back"

The following article was originally printed by The Miami Herald on Thursday, April 13th, 2006.

Tourists, beaches back in Cancún
El Universal Jueves 13 de abril de 2006 Miami Herald, página 1

Nearly six months after Hurricane Wilma ravaged the resort city, it seems Cancún is back in action.

Tom Latack was disappointed to see only rocks between his hotel and the ocean when he arrived in Cancún on March 30. We have been thrilled with the response and will continue to post your stories and pictures here for others to read. Here are some photos we recently received from one of our guests. We hope you will find this update helpful when you are planning your next trip into Cozumel. The following photos were taken at the El Cozumeleno by Funjet Vacations traveler, Tom.

“Hi, I’m Tom from Kiel, Wisconsin. Over the week of March 10th through March 17th my friends and I stayed at the El Cozumeleno in Cozumel. I had heard in the news that Cozumel was hit pretty hard during the hurricane season and had some concerns before going on my trip. However, if all of those reports were true, then they did a heck of a job cleaning things up! I didn’t see any damage to our hotel and wanted to share pictures from my vacation with other people looking into traveling to Cozumel.”

"Here is a picture of me (pictured right) lounging by the pool, soaking up some rays. My niece is an elementary school teacher and she asked me to bring “Flat Stanley” (pictured left) along for one of her students. In their classroom, they track where Stanley goes on and from what I hear, he sure does get around the world! Don’t worry, I didn’t let him have any of my Margarita, after all, Stanley is under age…and made of paper."

"The pools at the hotel were really nice & rarely crowded; and as an added bonus, once you finished your drink, the bartenders were right there asking if you needed another one! Everyone at the hotel was so nice and they really treated you like you were a member of the family! My favorite staff member was Juan. He kept the drinks flowing!"

"Every morning the hotel offered free scuba lessons in one of their pools. The hotel even had its very own scuba shop, complete with dive packages! First I need to work on my snorkeling technique, then I’ll move to scuba diving!"

"The beach at the hotel was a soft white powder. At the end of our stay, they were putting in even more of it, making it better than ever. We took advantage of their snorkel equipment that you could rent out (for free) and went snorkeling right off the hotel’s beach. We saw lots coral & fish-it was amazing!" -Tom (Kiel, Wisconsin)

Many thanks Tom for sharing all of your wonderful feedback and pictures from your vacation! Surrounded by thick mangroves, rich jungle, and native wild life (including wild pigs, lizards, iguanas, turtles and yes, even crocodiles), the Cozumel Country Club Golf Course is laid out to give privacy to each and every golfer; in fact, there are only three places amidst 72 holes, over 60 bunkers and extensive water traps where you can even see other golfers.

Funjet representative Zephne DuPlessis We hope you will find this update helpful when you are planning your next trip into Cozumel. The following photos were taken at the Allegro Cozumel by Funjet Vacations traveler, Nate Engebos between March 10th through March 20th, 2006 .

"My name is Nate Engebos and I am from Park City, Utah. My friends and I stayed at the Allegro Cozumel and frankly, I wish I was still there. Here are some pictures from our trip..."

"Here are some hotel guests participating in one of the day's planned activities. There were activities by the pool every morning. I personally was never a participator, but as you can probably tell from this picture, the activities were always entertaining to watch."

"My friend took this picture of me in one of my favorite places at the resort, the pool bar. After sitting in that hot sun, my friends and I loved jumping in for a swim and grabbing a drink. The pool bar had so many choices-from fruit smoothies to mixed drinks or soda-you always had drink envy of the person that ordered before or after you. I would have tried them all, but I ran out of time!"

"The beach in front of our hotel was unbelievable. there was beach volleyball and lots of beach chairs and palapas. I thought I might be crowded with lots of little kids running around, but there was plenty of space for everyone. "

"Before my vacation I had heard rumors that things were not looking too good in Cozumel, but once I got there I was relieved to learn that the rumors were just that: rumors. Everything looked find to me. This is a picture from our trip into downtown Cozumel, my female friends REALLY liked the jewelry stores but I have to say I preferred the tequila sampling. You know, there's something for everyone. I think the thing I liked most about Cozumel was its old town Mexico feel. There are plenty of areas that you can stay that are more Americanized, but my friends and I had more fun just exploring the less traveled parts of the island."

"My friends and I rented a jeep and drove around almost the entire island finding great places to stop and take pictures, look at the waves, enjoy the weather or find a little beach bar. I took this picture from the shores off the Punta Sur reef, it's a more remote area of the island where there are no hotels. In the end, I couldn't have asked for a better vacation."-Nate Engebos, Park City, UT

Thanks to Nate and his friends for sharing their pictures and stories with us! To our surprise, we hardly heard anything and we barely noticed any construction happening on the property. As one of the Cozumels’s most popular family-friendly traditions, Carnaval offers five days of fun including exciting parades, colorful floats, traditional regional foods, music and dancing.

“Carnaval is Cozumel’s grandest celebration. It focuses on family and tradition and is unlike any other festival of its kind,” said Raul Marrufo, director of the Cozumel Tourism Promotion Board. “It’s the perfect time for families and travelers from all walks of life to visit the island. They can learn about the true spirit of Cozumel while enjoying all the different and exciting festivities taking place for Carnaval. Cozumel’s Carnaval festival provides an unforgettable vacation experience for any traveler.”

Carnaval is slated to last February 22nd through the 28th, 2006. so, the beach recovery project is dedicated to restoring these areas through a process that will dredge sand from approximately 600-feet out to sea and deposit it onto the areas of shoreline where erosion occurred.

“We are excited to see the beach restoration underway, but most importantly, we are thrilled to see Cancun returning to its old self – sparkling, vibrant and energized,” said Artemio Santos Santos, executive director of the Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “We will soon move from restoration and renovation work back to ongoing projects of expansion and enhancement that will make Cancun more alluring than ever.”

To the relief of all who know and love Cancun, this project is just one more step Cancun, Mexico has taken to restore their home back to its legendary beauty, and to ensure that each and every visitor has an unforgettable vacation filled with long and relaxing beach walks.

<img style="DISPLAY: block;
